Tracking
Saturday 21st November 2020
Over the last few weeks in lockdown 2.0 we decided to do more of the walks around Wokingham that we did in the first lockdown. It is completely different - there are so many people around now - particularly runners.
On Saturday we did the walk up to Tesco's then round past Ludgrove school and back over the railway crossing. The only mammals we saw were grey squirrels - I did put them on the mammal tracking app! But we did see a lot of these boxes tied onto branches at about 4 foot high all the way along the road to the school. I wasnt sure what they were for (mammal footprint tracking, but which ones?) so I had to look it up when I got back, Apparently they are for tracking dormice! they have very distinctive footprints so you can tell them apart from mice etc which might also walk through. I will double check at university that I got it right! The starting place for wildlife conservation in any location is understanding what we already have (or dont have) - its great to see these sort of surveys taking place.
