Holkham Hall

Saturday 25th May 2024

It is raining here at the caravan but we came prepared! I get out my watercolours and Robin gets out his mosaic and we work on those for a few hours while the rain peters out. We really love this picture in their caravan - we looked up her website and will try and buy something! Eventually we set out and very close by we find this seagull who had made a nest on the ground in the middle of the park! Not very sensible we thought so I hope it turns out all right for them!

We walked along the coast path to Holkham Hall, most of the land around Wells is owned by the estate. They have done a lot around conservation and regenerative farming - they are really doing a great job! WE mostly wanted to see the Walled Garden - so we went there first - it is actually quite a long walk from the house so about 20 minutes later we got there and it is amazing. 6 and a half acres of walled garden that they are restoring. Half of it is completed the rest is work in progress. We sat down for coffee and to look at this strange citrus fruit it is called Buddahs hand and really does look like fingers - not sure that it would be great to eat but looks really interesting. The iris bed was amazing, its not very often you see a full bed of irises in flower like this! The grounds are huge and they have a large fallow deer herd which was pretty close - you could pay to go out on a tractor to see them at close quarters ut we didnt bother! By the time we got back to the house it had really started to rain - so we went to the shop which was very ice and we spent a lot of money. Then we had a coffee, then spotting a break in the weather we hotfooted it back to Wells!

We made it back to Wells and we were very wet! A quick drink in the pub to dry off and then we went to Bangs for dinner. Really lovely dinner that we can highly recommend, I would say that you really need to book if you want to eat out in Wells it was very busy. Later we walked back to the caravan, still damp and getting a bit cold. We had a lovely day and I really want to come back so that I can go to Holkham when its not raining!
