Fungi and statistics!
Tuesday 10th November 2020
Over the weekend we saw lots of different fungi on our walks - Robin turns out to be a really good fungi spotter!! But I am not good at fungi identification and so had to wait until today when I got back to the cottage to look up the Collins Complete Guide to British Wildlife. This picture is a Many-zoned Polypore - an extremely common bracket fungus apparently - I think it looks great! There are about 15,000 fungi species in the UK - and only 1 -2 % of them are actually poisonous (and most of those are not fatal) but most of them are not worth eating - not tasty!
I am now moving swiftly on to the next university assignments. Next one is on Wednesday 18th November - an online species identification test. Then an interim personal development plan (CV, covering letter, experience etc). And then our first report which is on the bird surveys that we did over the last few weeks. I worked on all of them today - the most taxing was the statistics needed for the report. Jaccard Similarity Index - https://www.statisticshowto.com/jaccard-index/ . And Simpsons diversity Index - https://www.statisticshowto.com/simpsons-diversity-index/ . I watched some youtube videos as well - seems Ok - but lets see!! We also have two pieces of work that we havent started that are due when we get back after Christmas. I am really enjoying learning so much - my head is full!
