Abbey grounds

Monday 29th November 2021

Today we start work on the next assignment - gathering UKhab ukhab – UK Habitat Classification data in the Abbey grounds and graveyard in Cirencester. We spent bout 4 hours in the morning and it was freezing!!

The UKhab system is a survey of habitats - it is pretty easy to use as a concept but the area we had was small and had lots of details in it - which will make it difficult to map.

Before we started we had a talk from someone from the Friends of St John the Baptist Churchyard - they are a group of volunteers that look after it. They have a 5 year plan to improve the churchyard - for wildlife, biodiversity and also to preserve the gravestones as much as possible. They are doing a great job there and it is lovely to see local people take an interest in their local area.

We walked back up to the university afterwards - took a long time to warm back up!
