Sunday 6th April 2025

We have a day to look around Catania, and it’s a beautiful sunny Sunday! First we went down to the Sunday flea market. There were lots of interesting stalls, wish we had something like this near us. Sicily is known for these type of ceramic heads, the Medusa was at the flea market the other in a shop. I really love them, so we bought a fridge magnet one!! It’s all we have space for!

Then we went back to Duomo square to go up to the top of the St Agatha church dome, you can just see people up there on this picture.

It was a bit of a climb but great views. That is mount Etna in the distance, covered in cloud but you can see the snow up there!

Next on the list was the Roman amphitheatre, which is outstanding! It has been and continues to be restored so it appears quite intact. There is the main theatre, but there is also a little side theatre where they might have had poetry readings rather than large performances. I was blown away by it, literally amazing to see it all there. You can see that houses have over time been built using the structure of the outer walls. It adds to the charm of the place. Amazing!

Catania is full of churches so we looked at quite a lot of them. Got a bit churched out to be honest do had a small snack for lunch. Or do we thought when we ordered. Not as small as we thought but very delicious! In the evening we promenaded down the Main Street together with what seemed like all of Catania. It’s mostly pedestrianised with those lovely wide roads and squares. Beautiful city that I would highly recommend!
