Kew

Tuesday 26th October 2021

What a great course I am on - a day trip to Kew counts as learning! 14 of us took the coach to Kew and then spent a lovely day looking around. We did have a set of questions to answer - it was a bit like those children's quizzes you get on a day out! We looked around the newly refurbished temperate house which was housing a Japanese exhibition. We had all been given the four Channel 5 programmes on Kew to watch beforehand so everyone had something that they really wanted to look at. The waterlily pads were a firm favourite as were the orchids. I had not realised how prolific orchids are - about 10% of all known seed plants in the world are orchids - I find that amazing! We went on the tree canopy walk and discovered that Milly is afraid of heights (but didn't want to be left behind)! We had over 4 hours there but missed so much - we all agreed we needed to go back. One thing that amazed everyone was the number of parakeets - they make a very foreign bird call and so are very noticeable - they were everywhere!
